Four tips to fight senior isolation and loneliness
Did you know that when seniors experience isolation or loneliness that it can have major effects on their health and well being? It’s true. It is important for seniors to have companionship with a spouse, friends, family members, or just getting out and running errands. Seniors who sit alone and isolate themselves from the world are damaging their health in more ways than one. That is why we want to bring light to this subject.
Four tips to fight senior isolation and loneliness:
- Schedule visits.
- Encourage companionship.
- Make time for fun activities.
- Find new hobbies.
Schedule visits.
Don’t let your busy schedule neglect the people you love most. Work, family, after-school activities, dinner, friends, and so on can fill up your schedule but it is important that you make time for the seniors in your life. They don’t get out as much as they used to and may not be able to drive or enjoy their favorite activities anymore. That is why it is important you schedule visits with them that way you don’t get too wrapped up in your own life that you forget the ones you love the most.
Encourage companionship.
Companions don’t have to be romantic, but they could be! Encouraging your loved ones to make friends or get back out there and date, after they have lost a spouse, is a great way for them to form bonds, converse, and just have someone to enjoy a meal with.
Make time for fun activities.
Do you remember what your loved ones used to enjoy doing when they were a little bit younger? If you do, try and make time for that. Whether it’s going to a car show, shopping, or catching a baseball game it’s important that you try and make time to do those things with them. No one likes being cooped up all day, get out and enjoy!
Find new hobbies.
Do your loved ones have hobbies they can no longer enjoy? It’s important that you encourage new ones. Find some local activities or get-togethers for seniors or if your loved one isn’t able to leave the house find things they can enjoy at home. It’s important to bring excitement and joy into their life whenever possible.
