How to help seniors combat loneliness during the holidays
As much fun as the holidays are, there is a real problem that seniors face during the holidays and that is loneliness. A majority of the seniors in the United States have dealt with loss or live alone and that makes the holiday season very hard for them to deal with. If you notice a friend, spouse, neighbor, or family member who seems down during this time of year, don’t be afraid to extend a hand of friendship.
How to help seniors combat loneliness during the holidays:
- Communication is key.
- Invite them to social activities.
- Make sure they know they are loved and cared for.
Communication is key.
Sometimes Seniors just want to know that someone is there to listen. If they live alone or are secluding themselves from human interaction during the holidays it is important that they have a listening ear. No matter what is bothering them, it is important that someone is there to listen. They could be sad about a lost loved one or upset that they have nowhere to go for the holidays.
Invite them to social activities.
There is always something going on during the holiday season. If you find a local calendar of events, it may be a good idea to share that with your loved one. Getting them out of the house and out of their funk may help turn their day around. There is so much holiday cheer and events put on by schools, churches, community centers, and more that the public can take part in. Don’t be afraid to invite them to join you and your family for your next outing.
Make sure they know they are loved and cared for.
You may assume that your loved one knows they are cared for, but being secluded from the outside world for days upon end can really put a damper on someone’s spirit. Take the extra step and go out of your way to show them how much you care. Sending daily cards, making phone calls, inviting them to dinner, or just stopping by unexpectedly can really uplift their spirits.
These are just a few ways to make the season brighter for the seniors in our lives — not just during the holidays, but all year long.
