7 ways to connect with your grandparents virtually
We have experienced unprecedented times in recent months, which has caused us to spend time away from our loved ones. This means there are no hugs from grandma or grandpa, family dinners, or fun holiday parties. While this has been hard on everyone we have been forced to find new ways to connect to those we love.
7 ways to connect with your grandparents virtually:
- Read a book together
- Play online games
- Text or email
- Send mail
- Video Chat
- Watch television together (while on the phone)
- Play 20 questions
Read a book together
Nothing connects people like a good book. You can take turns reading over the phone, read separately and talk about the book at a later time (aka book club), or send penpal letters discussing the book.
Play online games
If your grandparent is able to use a computer or a tablet there are a ton of games you can play online such as cards, word searches, puzzles, etc. that can help pass the time. This will give your loved one a fun activity to look forward to.
Text or email
You can stay up-to-date with texting or emailing on a regular basis. Use technology to your advantage and stay connected with those you love.
Send mail
Utilize your local post office and send cards, handwritten notes or letters, art, or care packages through the mail to send special gifts and messages. The mail is a great way to stay connected and let your loved ones know how much you care.
Video Chat
Tools like FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, Google Meet, etc. are great ways to see your loved ones without the fear of spreading germs. These tools have been utilized more than ever because they are superior when compared to normal phone calls and text messaging because you can see them.
Watch television together (while on the phone)
You can still enjoy one of your favorite pastimes such as watching a movie or your favorite television show together while on the phone. You can share laughs and commentary in between commercial breaks and it will give you some more opportunities for conversation after it’s over.
Play 20 questions
Games are always a great way to pass the time. While they aren’t easy to play virtually there are some games you can play over the phone such as 20 questions that can keep the conversation going. This game is also a great way for grandchildren to learn something new about their grandparents.
