With the changing of seasons comes hot temperatures. Some temperatures are so hot that they can be detrimental to one’s health, especially those who are older in years. That’s why it’s so important to understand what safety measures can be put in place to better protect those you love.

Summer Safety tips for Seniors

  1. Stay hydrated
  2. Stay indoors
  3. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen
  4. Know the signs of heat-related illnesses

Stay hydrated

Depending on your weight and age you should be drinking plenty of water. It’s always good to talk to your doctor about your nutritional needs as you age. Staying hydrated can help keep your body cool and prevent you from getting dehydrated when the weather is overly warm.

Stay indoors

Sometimes it’s best just to stay indoors. The warm temperatures can be brutal and that’s why it’s best to stay out of the blazing sun when possible. In order to keep you cool your body has to work overtime to do so which in turn causes more stress on your body.

Wear sunglasses and sunscreen

During peak times of the day the sun’s UV rays can be extra harmful. That’s why it’s important that you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and sunscreen to protect your skin from getting burnt. Doing these little things can help protect you from the UV rays that can damage your body.

Know the signs of heat-related illnesses

When you know the signs of exhaust exhaustion like: nausea, headache, excessive sweating, tiredness, dizziness, confusion, etc. it’s easier to diagnose and see that your loved one may be experiencing a medical emergency due to the heat.

Summertime brings a lot of fun outdoor activities, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to take the right precautions. Another bonus tip that you can do is stay out of the sun midday. The sun is at its highest peak between 10 am – 4 pm. This will save you from harmful UV rays that may damage your skin if not protected.
