The most special time of the year for many families is Christmas, but how do you make it special when your elderly loved one is living in an assisted living facility or aged care home? It’s a difficult task that shouldn’t be taken lightly. There are so many ways to ensure that your cherished family member can fully enjoy this holiday season and feel love from near or far away! From virtual get-togethers over Skype or FaceTime to planning out festive visits, here are some tips on how to make this holiday season magical and meaningful for those who need extra care.

How to make Christmas special for your loved ones in assisted living

1. Send Christmas cards and personalized messages to your loved ones in assisted living. Care packages are another great way to show you care this holiday season.

2. Spend time talking with them on the phone or via Facetiming. Technology has made communication so much easier with video chat – be sure to take advantage of this tool all throughout the year.

3. Bake them their favorite cookies or cake. There is nothing better than a home-cooked meal from those you love. While you are at it – hand-delivered is even better.

4. Sing carols or read holiday stories together. If you don’t sing – playing your favorite Christmas tunes on your phone or watching a holiday movie together is another way to show you care.

5. Put up a small Christmas tree or festive decorations in their room. Visits are great! Be sure to come by often and help decorate for all holidays, but especially Christmas.

6. Bring them a small gift, like a new book, scarf, or ornament. It’s not about the size or cost of the gift, but it’s really the thought that counts. A gift shows the recipient that you were thinking of them and that’s all they really need.

There are plenty of ways to make this holiday season magical and meaningful for your elderly loved one, even if they’re living in an assisted living facility or aged care home. From virtual get-togethers over Skype or FaceTime to planning out festive visits, a little bit of creativity and effort can go a long way in making this holiday season special. What are some other ways you can think of to make the holidays extra special for your loved ones?
