How to show an elderly loved one you care
Caring for an elderly loved one is an important task, but it’s important to remember that you don’t get so caught up in the work that you forget to spend quality time with them. When you spend the majority of your time taking care of someone it’s easy to forget that you should find some extra time to do something fun. That is why we wanted to put together a list of items that you could pull from to show your loved one that you care for them.
How to show an elderly loved one you care:
- Plan a fun activity
- Have a meal together
- Write them a card
- Reminisce on old family memories
Plan a fun activity
There is always fun to be had! It’s important to find common ground with those you love and find something you both enjoy doing. Whether it’s going to a baseball game, shopping, playing a board game at home or crafting it’s important you make time for fun. The fun times are the ones you want to remember at the end of the day and if you spend all your time focused on the caregiving part you are going to miss out on the good times. Be sure to block out some time on your schedule for a fun activity at least once a month.
Have a meal together
Who doesn’t like to eat? Great conversation and laughs are had over food. The smell of food and favorite dishes are great things to bond over. If your loved one can’t make it out of the house to visit their favorite restaurant, you can always order food to-go or make something delicious at home. Baking a good meal with a loved one is always a good thing to do.
Write them a card
Do you forget how exciting it is to get something in the mail other than a bill? Most likely, your loved one used to send a lot of handwritten cards through the mail back in their prime. It is a lost art, but one that doesn’t have to be forgotten. Take the time to drop by the store and pick up a “thinking of you card” to write a special note in. You would be surprised at how that simple gesture can brighten someone’s day.
Reminisce on old family memories
Have family stories or old pictures lying around? If so, these things make great conversation starters and are sure to bring joy to someone’s day.
