Spring cleaning tips for seniors
Spring is inching closer each and every day! The sun is shining and the winter air is beginning to depart. If you are not a fan of winter you appreciate this time of year more than most. With winter coming to a close that means it’s time for spring cleaning. Cleaning can seem like such a task on top of everything else that needs to be done. But, with the change in season makes it the perfect time to throw out some of the old to make room for the new.
Spring cleaning tips for seniors:
- Go through that medicine cabinet
- Set up an emergency plan
- Check your emergency systems (smoke alarms)
- Throw out some items that aren’t being used
Go through the medicine cabinet
When is the last time you or a loved one went through your medicine cabinet? It is important to go through your medicine cabinet on a regular basis to ensure that your containers are labeled correctly and that there are not any expired medications or loose pills lying around.
Set up an emergency plan
When is the last time you practiced a fire drill or if you were to have a fall? Be sure that you have emergency numbers written down or placed on your phone as a speed dial option. Also, it may be in your best interest to have a neighbor as an emergency contact that can come to your aide in a timely manner. You never know when disaster will strike so it’s important to be prepared.
Check your emergency systems
Do you check your smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, or burglary devices on a regular basis to ensure that they are all running properly? Mark our calendar to test these items for battery replacement as needed. You will also want to have a fire department representative inspect your smoke alarm to ensure that it will work in case emergency strikes.
Throw out some items that aren’t being used
Have you heard the saying, out with the old and in with the new? It’s easy to accumulate possessions as you progress throughout life. That is why it’s important to go through your things with a loved one and see what you can part with. A lot of your items may be donatable to a local charity that someone else can get use out of.
